HB Endless Journey: A Memoir of Gen Jose Almonte

Vividly written, Endless Journey, the memoir of Jose Almonte, tells the story of a man’s quest for meaningful change both as a soldier and public official. The book reaches back to his beginnings, as a student in the Philippine Military Academy fighting to keep the school’s honor, and covers momentous episodes in a richly lived life in the armed forces and civilian government.

As a young soldier, he joined the pursuit of the Huks in the rugged expanse of Sierra Madre. He was later assigned to Vietnam where he deeply immersed himself among the Viet Congs in a clandestine mission to spare the Philippine contingent from deathly harm.

He worked with four presidents—as aide to President Diosdado Macapagal and emissary to Southeast Asian heads of state; policy adviser to President Ferdinand Marcos and was pivotal in opening relations with China and the Soviet Union; anti-smuggling czar of President Corazon Aquino who gave no favor nor brooked no fear; and national security adviser of President Fidel Ramos where he provided the strategic muscle to level the country’s playing field, making enemies among the rich and powerful.

Endless Journey will contribute life lessons to the way Filipinos live and think. The memoir reveals insights and inside stories rarely made public and will give the readers a ringside view of history.

Gen. Almonte narrates his story to journalist Marites Danguilan Vitug.
